Landscapers in Eau Claire: Seasons, Permits & Diggers Hotline
Landscaping in the Chippewa Valley runs on a short calendar. Frozen ground through the winter limits when crews can dig, set pavers, or plant, so most installation work is squeezed between the spring thaw and freeze-up, and schedules fill early. Winter also shapes the design. Freeze-thaw cycles heave patios, walkways, and retaining walls that sit on a thin or poorly drained base, and plowed snow and deicing salt collect along driveways and the street. UW-Madison Extension notes that salt injures plants both through the soil and as spray that browns evergreens, so beds along a driveway or walk call for salt-tolerant plants and a plan for where the snow will go.
A state license lookup works differently for landscapers than for other trades. Wisconsin's Department of Safety and Professional Services, which licenses plumbers and electricians, credentials landscape architects for design work but lists no credential for landscaping contractors. Two licenses from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection can apply instead: a nursery dealer license, which the department's brochure says can cover landscape contractors that buy trees, shrubs, or perennials and resell them, and a commercial pesticide applicator license and certification, which state statutes require of anyone applying weed or insect treatments for hire. Permits depend on the project. In the City of Eau Claire, fences need a development permit and the City directs questions about new curb cuts to City Engineering, so ask whether a retaining wall or widened driveway on your plan needs approval and who will apply for it.
Almost every landscape job involves digging, and Wisconsin law requires whoever does it, homeowner or contractor, to contact Diggers Hotline at least three working days before starting. A good landscaper will also explain the plan before the first shovel goes in: how the yard will be graded and where runoff will go, how deep the compacted base will be under any patio or wall, which plants suit your sun, soil, and salt exposure, and who is handling the utility locate and permits. For planting beds and lawns, a lawn and garden soil test through the UW Soil and Forage Lab shows what the soil needs before anything is amended, and Chippewa County Extension posts the sampling steps and submission form.
Removing a large tree or grinding out old stumps is usually a separate job that has to happen before new beds or lawn go in, and the Eau Claire tree services directory lists local companies that handle that work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the best landscaper in Eau Claire?
This directory does not rank landscapers; compare the Google ratings and review counts listed above and request multiple quotes.
Do landscapers need a license in Wisconsin?
It depends on the work. Wisconsin's Department of Safety and Professional Services licenses landscape architects, whose practice state law describes as land planning and design, but lists no credential for landscaping contractors. The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection licenses nursery dealers, a group its brochure says can include landscape contractors that resell trees, shrubs, or perennials, and state law requires anyone applying weed or insect treatments for hire to hold a commercial pesticide applicator license. Ask which license covers each part of your job.
Do I need to call Diggers Hotline before planting trees or building a patio?
Yes. Diggers Hotline says everyone, including a homeowner working in their own yard, must contact it at least three working days before digging, and that the depth of the digging does not matter. Weekends and state legal holidays do not count. The service is free through 811 or an online request, but private lines such as sprinkler systems, ornamental lighting, and electric lines to a garage are not marked, so plan for how those will be found before the digging starts.
Can I plant a tree between the sidewalk and the street in Eau Claire?
Yes, with pre-approval from the City Forester. The city calls the strip between the sidewalk and the curb the boulevard, maintains the trees on it, and publishes recommended and prohibited species lists; spruce, pine, arborvitae, and silver maple, for example, are not allowed on boulevards, and only small trees may go under overhead power lines. City ordinance also bans planting boxelder, Chinese elm, cottonwood, and Siberian elm anywhere in Eau Claire, including private yards, so check any planting plan against those lists.
When is the best time to put in a new lawn in Eau Claire?
Late summer is the best time. UW-Madison Extension calls late August into early September the ideal window to establish a lawn from seed or sod, and it advises against seeding and other work that opens up turf in summer, when damaged cool-season grass recovers slowly and crabgrass moves into bare soil. Getting estimates in early summer leaves time to test the soil, clear the area, and schedule the work before that window opens.
What affects the cost of landscaping in Eau Claire?
Scope, soil, and access drive most of the price. Regrading or fixing drainage, hauling out old sod, stumps, or overgrown shrubs, and the depth of compacted base under patios and retaining walls all add labor and material. Sod versus seed, the size of trees and shrubs at planting, the type of stone or paver, and whether equipment can reach the backyard matter too. Ask each company for a written estimate that spells out the scope, including the plants and materials, so the bids describe the same work.
How were the landscapers on this list selected?
Every listing comes from public Google Business Profile data for landscapers that serve the Eau Claire area. Inclusion is free; no business pays to appear here. The list is not exhaustive, and other qualified landscapers may serve the area.
How often is this list updated?
Ratings, review counts, and phone numbers on this page are rechecked on a recurring schedule, and the date of the most recent update appears at the top of the page. Businesses can be added or removed as they open, close, or change their public information.
